To feel the things I needed to feel

2017年に37歳で第40代New Zealand首相に就任したJacinda Ardernが今月号のHarvard Business Reviewに掲載されたインタビューで次のように応えています。

HBR: Politicians face constant criticism, especially in crises. How did you develop a thick skin?

Ardern: I'm not sure that I did. Politics was sometimes quite a difficult experience for me. I knew going in that I was thin-skinned, and I initially thought the way to deal with that was to toughen up. But over time, I learned that the most important thing was to feel the things I needed to feel—because isn't that empathy? And isn't that a character trait we want to see more of in leaders? Criticism—or a feedback loop—can drive us to reexamine decisions and work harder on issues. At the same time, you can filter out the things that might be just political or a personal insult by asking, "What’s the motivation of the person pitching that forward right now?" Life's Work: Harvard Business Review (2025) An Interview with Jacinda Ardern

「けれども時が経つにつれて、最も重要なことは、自分が感じるべきことを感じることだと学びました。それが共感なのではないでしょうか。そしてそれは、私たちがリーダーたちにもっと求めたい性格的特徴ではないでしょうか。」


質問です。
①　私たちは感じるべきことを感じていると、私たち自身の中にどのような行動や変化が生まれるでしょうか。感じるべきことが感じられないということがあるとすると、それはどんな時でしょうか。
②　迎合や妥協ではなく、共感度の豊かなリーダーシップとはどのような能力や資質を指すのでしょうか。


Jacinda Ardernは今年の5月にYale Universityの卒業式で祝辞を述べました。その中で、共感について語っています。

"Now more than ever we must restate these lessons of the past. Remind one another that to be outwardly looking is not unpatriotic. To seek solutions to global problems is not a zero-sum game where your nation loses. That upholding a rules-based order is not nostalgic or of another era. And, crucially, that in this time of crisis and chaos, leading with empathy is a strength. There are some who say that empathy is some kind of threat to Western civilisation. There is much I could say to that claim; instead I will say just this. Empathy has never started a war. Never sought to take the dignity of others. And empathy teaches you that power is interchangeable with another word, responsibility. And so my platitudes about what we need from each of you at this crossroads still holds. In fact, they are more important now than ever. Because right now, we need the power of your imposter syndrome, because it is also your curiosity and your humility. We need your sensitivity, because it's also your kindness and your empathy. And most of all, we need your sense of duty to your home and to others. We need all of that, because it's about you. 私たちの目の前に山積する問題や課題の大きさに怯むあまり、私たちが自分の住む地域だけでなくさらに広い領域、そして世界とも密接に繋がっていることを見失い内向きになっていく傾向があります。けれども、「外向きであることは非国民的ではないことを、互いに思い起こす必要があります。」Jacinda Ardern

どうすれば学校や教室で豊かな「共感」を育む教育活動を展開していくことができるでしょうか。努力を続けていきたいと思います。
